Peacefull Islam

July 27, 2007

What is peacefull Islam?

It seems to me that peacefull Islam is that whole pretense that you tend to find when Muslims everywhere are denouncing terror plots, bombings, beheadings, so on and so forth.  You know, peacefull Islam is those verses and hadiths that tend to follow some bad news.

It’s that instictive, reflexive argument that tends to roll off our tongues or our fingertips as we type in order to defend our religion our god (which by the way is your god in our eyes 😉 ) and as an aftermath protect ourselves from the growing Islamophobia monster.  It’s an act of human nature.

Is there really a person out there that hasn’t heard that Islam is peacefull?  Doubtfull.

I’ve gotta say, I’m Muslim and I find myself changing the channel or the page when the writter or persona start giving the whole “peacefull Islam” speech.  I’ve heard it, I know it.

So, naturally, I have to wonder what the rest of the non-Muslims think in regards to our writters and our speakers that represent what the western Muslim masses think.  I wonder how much of what they are saying is actually being taken in.

Personally, I see the whole peacefull Islam lectures as a pr/marketing nightmare.  Let’s face it .. the whole world allready knows that we “moderates” believe that Islam is peacefull.  They know this because we are constantly placing a forward to our arguments “this is not Islam acting but rather it is people using Islam to further an agenda”  and if it were only that short so that I could hear the point but so often I see Muslims spending about 80 percent of their time defending Islam that by the time they got to admitting that there is some problem within the Islamic world or a problem between ideologies their admission/denouncement/debate has lost its appeal or been lost in the defense.

So .. tell me .. how do you feel that our Muslims in the media are presenting themselves?

It is an unfortunate fact that the 10 second grab in our main stream media has led to the demonisation of Islam. The old “Affirming the Consequent” argument. All terrorists are Extreme Islamists. All Extreme Islamists are Muslim. Therefore all Muslims are Terrorists. It is so simple to push into the conscienceness of the general populace. Especially when nothing else makes the mainstream media.

To overcome this bias, it is not sufficient to give a 10 second grab saying “No we are not!” That is so obviously a lie. After all “everyone knows” about Muslims and terrorism.

So, it seems it may be necessary to spend an inordinate amount of time overcoming the background bias.

I know and you know that “Islam is inherently peaceful” but 99% of the rest of the population don’t know this and we may never change their minds.

I think is was John the Baptist who used the words of a prophet (Elijah?) “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness”. Perhaps in two or three centuries, the mood may shift.

    Sorry for ranting on 🙂

    Rant on Archie.

So, do you think that it is actually productive of Muslims to concentrate on talking about “peaceful Islam” rather than focusing on the issues?

It’s not that I think we shouldn’t keep reiterating that the majority of Muslims are peaceful but somehow I think it is more important that we address the issues, that we stress our abhorence of those acts and then speak about Islam being peacefull while not taking up 80% of the time alloted for explaining how peacefull Islam is.

We’re too busy being defensive and while it’s sad that mainstream media has put us in this situation, I don’t think that we’re accomplishing anything by being so defensive.

    I think a multi-faceted approach is needed.

Firstly, the words need to be said, often and loudly. Condemnation of the terrorists and the bullies (I think you know which group of MEN I refer to here) is needed, often and persistently.

Secondly, education needs to be opened up so the rest of the world can see that the benefits of Islamic schools are similar to the benefits of Christian schools. The teaching of faith and morals are cornerstones of any religious education system. There needs to be some strong moral pressure brought to bear on those who try to pervert those teachings, Christain, Islamic or Judaic.

Thirdly, in the Christian Bible is a verse, “By their works ye shall know them.” I’m not sure if there is something similar in your Hadiths. Society looks on events and deeds. Perhaps we need more Islamic charities working here in the west. Openly and with the publicity many Christian and Judaic charities get.

Hmm – I think that is what I mean – I know there are no easy or quick solutions but possibly these thoughts may be a start.
