Here’s A Reason to Regret It….

Hillary Clinton, makes statements that she’d go nuclear on Iran if they go nuclear on Israel – and she has no regrets.  Konservo has video of her Iran/nuclear statements and I was reminded of the whole Paksitan debate that ensued last summer.

“Why would I have any regrets?” Senator Clinton said Saturday in response to ABC News’ question as to whether she had any regrets about threatening Tehran.

“I am asked a question about what I would do if Iran attacked our ally, a country that many of us have a great deal of, you know, connection with and feeling for,” the Democratic hopeful continued.

The former first lady added that she sought to make it ‘very clear’ for Iranian echelons what to expect if they ever draw up a plan for attacking Israel.

“I sure want to make it abundantly clear to them that they would face a tremendous cost if they did such a thing,” Clinton expounded.  source

However, Clinton sure did go nutty on Obama when Obama discussed Pakistan last summer and then when Obama said he wouldn’t use the nuclear option, Hillary had this to say:

“Presidents should be very careful at all times in discussing the use or nonuse of nuclear weapons,” Clinton said. “Presidents since the Cold War have used nuclear deterrence to keep the peace. And I don’t believe that any president should make any blanket statements with respect to the use or nonuse of nuclear weapons.”  source

So which is it?  You should or should not make blanket statements in regards to the use or nonuse of nuclear weapons?  Well, okay, maybe it’s okay to bring these issues up when Independants and Republicans get to vote for you in the open Indiana primary … hmmmm …

Gimme a break.

Clinton also suggested Obama’s high-profile speech earlier in the week in which he said would be willing to invade Pakistan to attack high-profile al Qaeda targets, given actionable intelligence, was inappropriate, further evidence that she is painting her challenger as unprepared for the job of commander in chief.

Well, technically, she’s pointing out how he is painting himself. Obama has been vocal about America not using or even possessing nuclear weapons. Really? So why do we even have nukes?

As far as I can see, nuclear weapons can be used for 1) obliterating an enemy or perceived enemy or 2) as a means of deterring an enemy from obliterating you or your allies.

Obama needs to be able to give concerned Americans some confidence. Maybe you and I both know that it is unlikely that we will need to use a nuclear weapon, and, of course, it we could all breathe a lot easier if the Earth was nuke-free, but this isn’t realistic. There are people who see Obama’s position as one which will compromise our security and which practically invites attacks (from the enemy/terrorist du jour).

I think you have to listen closely to what he’s saying .. keywords unproven .. goals .. seek .. with Russia our ICBMs off air trigger alert .. no NEW nukes ..

He’s actually applied Hillary’s rules to that speech.

And actually – I do not consider option number 2 as an option. After the whole Iraq thing – I don’t think I can ever trust our power figures to assess a situation as necessary to use nukes as a deterrent.

I think Obama has shown with his stance on Pakistan that he is willing to do what it takes to rid the region of terrorism (whether we like that stance or not). Additionally, his position on diplomacy gives us the security that he isn’t just going to go pull an Iraq on us.

Ah, but we already use our military power (including nukes) that way. If we were to get rid of our nukes, people (here in the US and around the world) would think we are vulnerable. Hmm…. so, I guess besides being a deterrent for other nuclear powers (should we piss them off sufficiently), nukes also give our own citizens piece of mind. That’s probably the only reason why Kamenei, Ahmadinejad, and the Iranian extremist/nationalists want nuclear “””power”””

Konservo – you said as a deterent from your enemies obliterating you or your allies. Well, if they can obliterate us .. it doesn’t matter that we have nukes (if we get obliterated) – so I assumed we were talking pre-emptive attack.

“That’s probably the only reason why Kamenei, Ahmadinejad, and the Iranian extremist/nationalists want nuclear “””power””””

Oh, and I’m sure they’re doing a little whimpering that goes a little something like “well, Israel has em, why can’t we?”

buenotc – hehe – yeah, nothing like the old cold war days.

darvish – wooo hoooo! Just as long as we have a candidate – I’m tired of the soap opera. I would support either in the end – anyone is goint to be better then McCain.
